Mac's Clay Head

Here's a photo of the clay portrait head that I made of Julian.
5 years at Art School paid off on this job!

It was a really enjoyable thing to do, and a great opportunity to do something that I really miss doing.

There was a small little room inside the vast studio that we shot in, and whenever Julian wasn't on camera, and was able to spare some time, he'd come and sit for me whilst I sculpted his portrait.

The whole process only took about 6-8 hours, but spread over about a week or two, with Julian sitting for about an hour at a time.

I think I might have only had about 3 hours with Julian, the rest of the time I used photographs. Luckily, I got his likeness quite quickly. It isn't always that easy, and I was glad it worked out, especially as I haven't done a clay portrait head for about 15 years!

I must say, I was well impressed with the clay portrait head of Mac - but Sue's breasts were rather wonkey :-))

It must have broken your heart to watch Pippa tweak off his nose after all that work.

lol - yes I had a funny feeling that clay bust might have been your handwork when I saw It for the first time...

Nice work - shame about Tamsin ripping his nose off!

Is it even worth asking what has happened to the masterpiece now? Because I'm sure I could think of a good home for it. Noseless or otherwise.

By the way, I havent commented before so just want to say - I really love that you're posting all these behind the scenes photos. Thank you :)

Did you paint the portrait of Martin as well..? What a talented Design department Green Wing has got!

Thanks for all your comments.

I didn't paint the Martin portrait, that was done by a Scenic Artist.

It was a bit hard to slice the nose off, but I knew it was going to happen.

Sadly, because it was made of clay, it would never keep, unless I made a mould of it and cast it, but sadly I didn't have the time to do that.

Well done! It was an astonishingly good likeness. What does Julian think of seeing himself immoratalised in clay? Does he think it looks like him?

I think he really liked it, and wished I'd been able to give him a copy.

It really was a scary likeness to Julian! I wish I was as talented as that, but all I could ever do with clay was make a ball and even that was pushing it as times.
